The BTech Program
|
The objective of this program is to prepare students to undertake careers involving innovation and problem solving using IT, or to undertake advanced studies for research careers in IT or the domain areas.
IT is now becoming a discipline that is distinct from Computer Science. IIIT Delhi aims to have such a curriculum which is Computer Science-based, and which will develop in students skills for problem solving using engineering and research approaches, in the field of IT or some domains of IT. It plans to have a strong foundational program, which can be built upon for specializing in different areas of IT or IT domains. In IIITD, this foundational program will heavily derive from Computer Science, and will be supplemented with suitable IT oriented courses. Some of the salient points of the BTech program are:
|
- As it is an IT focused program, it “inverts the pyramid” and start with computing oriented courses first, and the general and sciences courses later. Besides being better suited for an IT program, it also enables the possibility of students seeing newer applications and possibilities of relating IT with these subjects.
- Has a core program that focuses on computing fundamentals as well as communication skills.
- After the core program, there is flexibility on the courses the students can do. The program allows limited specialization through the concept of streams.
- Humanities and social sciences is an integral part of the curriculum.
- Allows motivated students to graduate with a “BTech (Honors)” by doing extra units.
- Has a heavy emphasis on practice with many courses having labs and programming assignments as integral part of the course work.
- Builds research skills also through courses like “independent study” and “independent projects”
- Allows motivated students to graduate with a “BTech (Honors)” by doing extra units.

Scholarship
Starting from the academic session 2010-2011, the Institute has an income linked scholarship scheme for BTech students. Learn more about it here.

The MTech Program |
IIIT-Delhi subscribes to the view that a Masters degree is primarily industry-focused, though it can be used as a stepping stone for research as well. And the decision whether the degree is to be pursued for skill and knowledge up-gradation or also for building research skills should rest with the student. The Institute believes that a student should also be given an option of pursuing
MTech without assistantship so he/she can focus full time on the program, and possibly finish the program MTech sooner, as compared to a student who is on assistantship and so has to do part-
time work in lieu of the assistantship.
The Institute also feels that to address the needs of the industry, which today requires more specialized manpower as each field is getting more complex, it is desirable to provide specializations within Computer Science in the MTech program. For this, the Institute permits a student to do an "MTech in Computer Science" or "MTech in Computer Science with specialization in area". Currently, the Institute is offering specialization in only Information Security.
The overall structure of the MTech program is given here.

The PhD Program |
The PhD program at IIITD is like any other PhD program with a focus on research. The overall PhD program of IIIT Delhi is like that of any IIT – a limited coursework followed by research. The main aspect of the PhD program are described in the PG ordinance and the PG regulation.
IIIT Delhi has started its PhD program as a collaborative PhD program between IIIT-D and some globally renowned labs and universities. Key features of this program are:
|
- A PhD student is admitted into IIITD, from where he/she will get the degree. Interview for admission may be done jointly by IIITD and the partner group.
- The main supervisor of the PhD scholar will be from IIITD; there may be a co-supervisor from the partner group.
- After doing the course work and starting the research, the scholar may spend 3 months to 1 year with the co-supervisor at the partner group/institution
- Being a focused program, it is expected that a scholar will be able to finish PhD in 4 yrs.
- Attractive compensation – the stipend in first year is Rs 20,000 per month; 2nd to 4th year it can be upto Rs 25,000 per month. While the scholar is at the partner group/ organization, the partner will pay the stipend as per their norms.
- Institute will provide support to present papers in national and International conferences.
